Although there's an abundance of three-row SUVs on the market, something about Honda's Pilot keeps it a top contender year after year. With seating for up to eight passengers, plenty of cargo space, a strong yet efficient V6 engine, and a reputation for longevity and dependability, it's easy to see why. The 2020 model year brings the all-new Black Edition, which comes with standard all-wheel drive, a blacked-out exterior, and red interior accents. Aside from this, it's the same rugged yet family-friendly Pilot that keeps bringing back repeat buyers while continuing to win over new drivers.

Trims and Powertrain

The '20 Pilot offers six trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, Elite, and Black Edition. Each has a 3.5-liter V6 making 260 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission comes standard on the three lower trims, and the Touring, Elite, and Black Edition get a nine-speed automatic. The top two trims come standard with all-wheel drive, while the other four trims get front-wheel drive with AWD as an option.

Comfort and Convenience

The base LX is equipped with remote keyless entry, push-button ignition, a rearview camera, and 60/40-split flat-folding third-row seats. The EX gains plenty more features in the form of heated side mirrors with LED turn indicators, Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock, LED fog lights, tri-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver's seat, one-touch second-row seats, and heated front seats. Additional features on the EX-L include a sunroof, a power tailgate, a sound-reducing windshield, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, memory functions for the driver's seat and side mirrors, a power-adjustable passenger's seat, and leather-trimmed seats.

The Touring gets conveniences ranging from a hands-free power tailgate, roof rails, and front and rear parking sensors to LED headlights and ambient interior lighting. The Elite packs in a panoramic roof, a heated steering wheel, perforated second-row captain's chairs (reducing seating to seven), and perforated heated and ventilated front seats. The Black Edition is equipped like the Elite, but with some trim-specific styling elements.

Connectivity and Safety Technology

The LX comes with an infotainment system with a 5-inch touchscreen, a center console USB port, a seven-speaker audio system, and Bluetooth hands-free streaming. The EX upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen and adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite and HD radio; the EX-L receives two second-row USB ports. The Touring trim provides integrated navigation with voice recognition and HD traffic, a rear entertainment system (with a 10.2-inch screen, Blu-ray, and built-in streaming), a second-row HDMI unit, a premium 10-speaker audio system, Honda's Cabin Talk PA system, on-board Wi-Fi, and multi-zone audio. The Elite and Black Edition both receive a wireless phone charger as well.

All versions of the 2020 Pilot come with the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assist technologies. These includes collision mitigation, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams. The trim levels above the LX also get a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
