2019 Honda Insight Hybrid

Overview

The Honda Insight hybrid is back after a 5-year absence, with bold new styling and some impressive standard features. Built on the Civic platform, this new incarnation has an upscale appearance with its conventional good looks, an update from the futuristic appearance of the first-generation Insight and other early hybrids, and its fine fit and finish. The three trim levels - LX, EX, and Touring - are all the same under the hood but differ in comfort and convenience equipment. All feature a rearview camera, Bluetooth capability, and the Honda Sensing active safety technology. The EX trim adds remote start, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock, which lets you lock and unlock the doors without taking out the key fob. Deluxe features on the Touring edition include leather-trimmed power heated front seats, a one-touch power moonroof, mobile hotspot capability, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Performance

The aerodynamically designed Insight offers fine handling and truly impressive fuel economy. Its 1.5-liter Atkinson gasoline engine (107 hp and 99 lb-ft of torque) and electric motor (120 hp and 197 lb-ft of torque) combine to achieve up to 55 mpg (slightly less for the Touring trim, with its additional equipment and larger tires) in the city as well as the top power-to-weight ratio in its class. The Insight has a secondary backup motor that serves as its generator and starter, and the combined horsepower is 151.5. Three drive modes - EV, Hybrid and Engine - power the Insight at its highest efficiency for the conditions, with three modes for each: Eco, Normal and Sport.

The EX and Touring trims also include smartphone integration and audio interface, text message function, and SiriusXM Radio and HD Radio. Honda Satellite Linked Navigation System with voice recognition and Honda HD Digital Traffic are standard on the Touring, as are mobile hotspot capability and HondaLink subscription services.

Safety

The Honda Sensing package of active safety features, including adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow and traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, road departure mitigation, right-side blind-spot camera, forward-collision alert, and automated emergency braking, is standard equipment on every Insight. Daytime running lights, auto-on LED headlights, and LED tail and brake lights are standard as well, for better visibility and heightened safety.
