The 2011 CR-Z is a brnad new model from Honda, and will represent the automaker's third hybrid. Honda's CR-Z hybrid coupe remains on track as a 2011 model, on sale in late 2010. Honda wants sports-car enthusiasts to buy it not because it's green, but because it's fun. The carmaker considered doing a non-hybrid version of the CR-Z, but it wants to be seen as a hybrid supplier on par with Toyota and believes it needs a range of dedicated hybrid-only models to achieve that. The CR-Z is sportier than Honda's other hybrid offerings, both in appearance and driving experience than previous models. For driving pleasure, the CR-Z has Sport, Normal and Econ modes.
The transmission on the CR-Z offers tight, precise, short-throw linkage makes you think of the CR-X. The compact, H-shape torsion beam in the rear does not inhibit driving.
The 2011 Honda CR-Z's engine shines between 1,000 and 5,000 rpm on the tachometer. Dirivng this vehicle offers a smooth, seamless blend of power that gives a thirlling ride.
The CR-Z has a sporty suspension that gives just the right balance of firm but not harsh ride. Drivers will find that the CR-Z uses its quick-ratio electric-assist steering to turn into corners well and neatly stay on line. The steering of the CR-Z is consistently linear in the way it behaves.
The 2011 Honda CR-Z is available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). With this option the CR-Z still accelerates quickly and smoothly.
Honda has greatly improved the design of this model by shortening the wheelbase, widening the front and rear track and making the structure far more rigid.
The Honda CR-Z measures in size 160.6 inches from end to end,and 68.5 inches wide. The Honda CR-Z gets the suspension of the Insight platform with front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion-beam setup.
Electronics equipment figures prominently in the CR-Z. It comes standard with a six-speaker AM/FM/CD/USB sound system, remote keyless entry, and cruise control. The higher-end EX model comes with a Bluetooth link and a subwoofer-equipped 360-watt premium sound system. A satellite-linked navigation system with voice recognition is an option.
The hybrid CR-Z is coming in just a few months, said Honda Chief Executive Takanobu Ito at a press conference here at the North American International Auto Show.
Safety features on the car include six airbags and antilock brakes, he added. Though Honda is getting more earnest with its hybrid program, its heart lies with vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which Ito called the ultimate eco-car. We continue to believe the fuel cell electric vehicle is the ultimate solution to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, Ito said.
The inside of the Honda CR-Z is interesting and easily likable. The driving position is low-set, ideal for performance type driving. The pedals and shift lever feel perfectly placed. The sport seats give a perfect balance of support, and they look good too.
Slip into the driver's seat and you'll sense how much lower you sit in the CR-Z than in an Insight. The cabin of this Honda model is an effective design similar to that of the Insight, with cockpit-style driver-oriented controls and displays. Storage bins behind the seats are separated from the cargo area by a bulkhead that can be folded forward to extend the cargo hatch's floor, similar to a folding seat's backrest. A retractable cargo cover is available. Even the ventilation controls are on a pod near the driver; there's no conventional control panel on the center of the dashboard, which puts the optional navigation system right of center.
The CR-Z comes with many standard features. These include a leather steering wheel, cruise control and a CD stereo with a USB audio interface, power windows and locks, and single-zone automatic climate control. The next trim up is the EX. This upper trim offers a center storage console, xenon headlights, Bluetooth connectivity, fog lights, and a premium stereo with subwoofer. Navigation is an optional feature. There's plenty of headroom for tall drivers. Flatten the rear seats and you create 14.1 cubic feet of luggage space, enough for a couple of suitcases, or two golf bags.
The Honda CR-Z was first introduced in late 2010. Although the CR-Z has its own unique styling it is similar to the Insight in that it uses the same petrol-electric hybrid format. This format pairs a 1.3-litre engine with an IMA electric motor. This is the first time this setup has appeared in a sports car.
